Your dog got into a fight with someone else's dog. Now what?

Writer: Ian RobertsonIan Robertson

We routinely help owners whose dog has been in a fight. Dog fights are understandably stressful, but knowing what to do ahead of time 'just in case' can help protect you, your dog, and be invaluable if dealing with issues about liability later.

Here are five top points that do - or would have - made a very helpful difference in files we've seen involving dog fights:

1. Stay as calm as you can to handle the situation effectively.

2. Secure your dog immediately and ensure they’re safely restrained.

3. Turn on your phone’s video camera to record the details (e.g. the other person's contact details, the location) and the subsequent conversation.

4. Take note of witnesses and, if possible, ask for their contact details.

5. Get your dog checked by a veterinarian, even if injuries aren’t obvious.

🐾 We’ll share tips on Councils and further tips on what to do in these situations in future posts.
